Gregor's Room-Final

In progress photo:

In class, the assignment was to read the story "The Metamorphosis" written by Franz Kafka and picture what the main protagonist's room may look like throughout the story. During the read, the main protagonist, Gregor, often showed child-like innocence in my eyes. For the room, I made a typical child's room with the idea of something sinister laying beneath. This project is made completely from paper and water, the colors were done with a variety of Winsor and Newton inks.

Figurative Bust Sculptures-Final

 Sculpture No. 1-

Sculpture No.2-

In Progress Photos:

These two figurative bust sculptures were made from Stonex air dry clay and both of the bases are made from scrap wood. Each of the sculptures has a story to tell. The first bust was inspired by a story I heard. A woman was breastfeeding her son in a public place and was shamed for it. The idea of a mother being shamed for feeding her child irked me and would not leave my mind. The sculpture is a partially nude woman, cradling a swaddled baby to her right breast. She has few discernible features on her face, while the word "Shame" is written across her mouth. The base is painted with white acrylic while a baby's "feet prints" are placed on the front. The second sculpture is less serious, though much like the first, also has a story to tell. Growing up, my grandfather always warned me that "too much television would rot my brain". I wanted to do an art piece based on that saying. The sculpture depicts a female humanoid body with a classic television replacing her head. Inside the screen is a human brain. This piece was made to be more macabre and centered around the theme of horror.

Dinner and a movie--Final

Movie inspiration: Blade Runner (1982)
This piece was made to represent the somberness and danger of the setting. Most of the pictures are black and white as well as the newspaper below the bowl and the bottle, this is to portray the emptiness and bleakness in the protagonist's life and career. The bright red cross marks and question marks on the photos in the lower upper right and left sides of the bowl depict the mystery and danger that lurks in the slums of the setting. The tipped bowl of noodles is to give the viewer the sense of chaos and instability of the many characters in the story. Each of the food-related items points to the photo of the woman, subtly showing that the story leads up to her. The left side of the piece, with the picture of the woman, is illuminated in white to show the happiness she brings to the story, and the main protagonist, while the right side of the piece is bathed in a deep neon purple to draw in the viewer and to also represent the exotic and futuristic elements that the story provides.
